Captain Marvel: A Symbol of Selflessness in a Selfish World. (Moview)

“I’m not gonna fight your war. I’m gonna end it.” – Carol Danvers

Here we go again, folks! Another MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) entry is invading our minds this Women’s month; not only because it is a sequel entry but also it embodies the pride of all women’s celebrating as of the moment.

As the story goes, let me start with a disclaimer, this is a moview which may consists a little too much information you could ever read about the movie, in short, a possible spoiler.

Please close your computer and watch the movie first if you haven’t viewed it yet.

Read at your own risk….

Yeah, yeah, Let’s start with how Marvel made a tribute for our beloved, Stan Lee. For those who are not familiar or who doesn’t know him, you may have seen him by his cameo on each and every Marvel movies. He is the creator of the heroes you’ve all been idolizing today.

Stan Lee passed away last November 12, 2018 and that day was the saddest moment for all Marvel fans, well, up until this day, we miss our old pal. I’m pretty touched how the intro was made tribute to the great man himself. The usual “MARVEL STUDIOS” intro was compilation of clips from the past films and the heroes, but this time, it was Stan who was in the intro; all the characters of the cameos he made in all the films were compiled into one beautiful intro and last, the one which made me tear up even before the movie started, was “THANK YOU, STAN.” yup, a sad and deep moment, I’d say.

It’s just the best way to acknowledge a great man for his great magnum opus.

Anyway, moving on, I’d say this movie is pretty special, not only because this is the first movie released after Mr. Stan’s passing but this is also released in time for the Women’s month, March. So this movie makes it so timely for Women’s Empowerment Month.

Let’s start with the synopsis; I’m not an expert of the MCU (I’m a DC fan and sometimes I’m kind of bias but not this time though) but please, don’t hesitate to message me for corrections. In the film, Captain Marvel is about Vers, a Kree warrior, who is fighting for her people against the Skrulls, an intergalactic war occurred only to trigger her lost memories. Apparently, her real name is Carol Danvers and she was a part of the U.S. Air Force and was sent into a mission in which they failed to fulfill and led to gaining her powers. In the movie, they showed how everything started and how her legacy becomes the start of something bigger. Of course, with the existence of Nick Fury, it’s also the timeline where the Avengers was founded. And that is how wickedly good movies in 2019 are now.

Well, it won’t be a moview without the characters.

Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. I don’t know about you but I have known her from 21 Jump Street as Molly Tracey  and Room as MaAside from her looks just best describes Ms. Marvel from Comics, I’d say her appeal created more life to the character. She’s like Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) of the MCU. She just fits right in. I love the way she portrayed the character and how magical it was to see her when she changed the color of her suit, plus the humor, it was naturally hilarious even if I know it was scripted. She’s just as natural as Gal was in Wonder Woman. Unlike Scarlet Johansson who played the Black Widow, Brie has a sweet face, coz we all know how fierce and cut-throat Black Widow looks.

Jude Law as Yon-Rogg. Jude has played as Albus Dumbledore in the latest sequel of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald , he also played Hugo’s father in the film Hugo.

In the early years of Marvel comics, Yon-Rogg was a Kree warrior who was sent to Earth to get information or investigate. Yon-Rogg is the enemy of Mar-Vell, who became the reason of Una‘s death(Una is one of the reasons why Mar-Vell and Yon are enemies) later on, his story changed little by little as years passed and comic plots changed, but still, from playing big part to Mar-Vell’s life to recruiting Carol Danvers, he still has a big part in the MCU. (I mean, for those who are confused, in DC universe, Captain Marvel is actually a man who is known as Shazam but in MCU, she’s a lady apparently.)

In the film, he was believed to be Vers’ field mentor but turned to be the archnemesis in the end. I’d say Jude Law is good and the character was given justice.

Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Hey y’all, you all know who Nick Fury is, we all know who this man is, one eyed or another. gotcha! The movie also focused on how Nick met Carol Danvers and how he trusted her in a way that made them one team. Yes, yes, I know you are all excited about the effects in which they made him a little younger. You heard it right, they de-aged Nick Fury and Agent Coulson in the movie, coz the setting of the movie is in 90s and it’s just appropriate that you all viewers should see their 90s look, plus a two eyed, Nick, C’mon. In the movie, they also showed how he got that scratch in his eye which was really relevant and hilarious at the same time.

Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva. She played as an elite Kree warrior, a sniper and a badass starforce from Kree. You’ve known her from Crazy Rich Asians as Astrid and her character as Minn-Erva is so much different from Astrid but well, both badass.

Akira Akbar as the little Monica Rambeau. I don’t but at first I was stunned because they gave the character a little spot light in the movie, maybe because they want to introduce her to the viewers. In the comics, Monica turned into Captain Marvel and she was the one who coordinated with the Avengers to seek alliance in the future. However, in the movie it was totally different. The entertainment she contributed in the movie is beyond imaginable, I mean who sends her mom into a crazy ass mission that can get her mother killed? Well of course she wants to be proud of her mom, but still…

And of course, Goose, the cat that stole the whole spotlight from everyone. In the comics, it was Chewie, Carol’s pet which was brought with her during her space adventure and turned out to be extraordinary and a Flerken, a creature that as a mouth that has pocket dimensions and its tentacles/tendrils that devours prey and they also can lay eggs. However in the movie, it didn’t lay eggs but she captured the hearts of many. Goose swallowed the Tesseract (Cosmic Cube) and later on burps it out like a hairball. In every way, Goose has captured the hearts of the viewers.

Some of the other remarkable characters were;

Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Annette Bening as Supreme Intelligence, Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan, Chuku Modu as Soh-Larr, Matthew Maher as Norex and Djimon Hounsou as Korath.

What did the movie changed from the comics? There’s not much, however, in every Marvel film, they changed so many things and this time, they changed the gender of Mar-Vell, they made it a woman, I guess they are trying to give women representation in the movie from child to older woman. So that caused a no Yon-rogg-Una-Mar-Vell history in the timeline.

The story behind Yon-rogg and Mar-Vell wasn’t there in the movie. He is obsessed on killing Mar-Vell out of jealousy because of Una. I guess it was also something worth telling.

The war between Kree and Skrulls was not elaborated that much; they focused on C53 and how they actually did everything there. Although it was later explained how they became enemies and who are the real evils.

Chewie is the real name of Goose the cat.

They also didn’t show the extent of what a Flerken can do, it just swallowed and swallowed but in the comics, it can do so much more. It can lay 100 plus eggs, yes.

What I felt after watching the movie? World has changed on how they look at women. The movie is feminist than ever. They focused on empowering women to stand up on their own and be strong enough to take care of mankind, which is now happening in the real world. It made every fickle-hearted realize what women can do and what our emotions can bring.

Yon-rogg kept on reminding Vers that she has to use only her mind but for whatever reason, we women can never use only one. We use all of our senses in all things. We feel things better than anyone else can.

In the movie, it is an enlightenment for us viewers that we can use our hearts together with our minds. We can use both of them to make good decisions even in real life. It was so inspiring how they show strong women from Captain Marvel to Maria Rambeau.

The movie is just has the right amount of feminism that doesn’t even step on the opposite sex. It gave us more power and more hold. Whatever we may be facing, we, women are strong even alone. The movie embodies friendship, comradeship and sacrifices which is pretty bad ass to describe us, women.

What is verdict? In every moview, there’s a rating and this, my friend is beyond spectacular! I give this movie and its effects a good thumbs up and a 95% wonderroanne rating!!

To all those who haven’t watch it yet, c’mon, it’s worth your money, you’ll see! 🙂
