One Of Us Is Lying (A Moview)

After Riverdale, Pretty Little Liars, Elite and so much more TV series that are based in a thriller, suspense genre which likely perceives a dark side of high school kind of thing, yet another thrilling story that will question all your trust when it comes to people, is released by Netflix. Yes, I know my intro is kinda crooked but yes, I have been watching so many TV Series lately that I think everything is just the same. One killed one, one lied about it and one will be blamed for it. That’s basically how the story goes nowadays but don’t you agree? Like there’s some kind of standard when it comes to making thriller and mind-bugging shows and to top it all of we just need to determine which TV series that was previously released best saves similarities of this new one. I know, it’s a lot to take in for an introduction, it’s the same as watching slasher movies all over again but you already know that the one who acted dumb is the killer.

OOUIL (One of us is lying) is the new released TV series about 4 high school students with different backgrounds getting framed for their schoolmate’s death; this is based from the mystery/suspense novel of the same titled written by Karen McManus. The series revolves around the time when everyone has suspected the four students of the crime and every episode will spark investigation and story telling for every each of the characters including their possible involvement in the case but are they really innocent? Well, in the TV Series we will know for sure.

Since this is a book adaptation, of course there are some changes and one of them is that no one killed Simon, he decided the suicide long time back and he made Jake to set up things after his death. This explains how incapable the Murder Club (the 4 students, Brownwyn, Nate, Cooper and Addy) to kill Simon. Simon just wanted something tragic to happen and he wants his enemies to be pinned down. In the Tv series, they made Simon’s death a little substantial and by doing that it has caused the Murder Club a road of freedom. Jake also didn’t kill Simon and was never dead in the book, he was arrested instead. Simon is darker in the book that he was portrayed in the series. He is like a walking suicidal table.

One more changes made was that Janae never hated Simon. But Janae knows everything about Simon’s suicide plan and his deep thoughts about mass shootings and massacre, but Janae tried to stop Simon, however she was also pinned down to be a suspect by Jake. She was framed by Jake using the recording of a conversation that Simon had with Janae. Well, Janae doesn’t even know Maeve, Browyn’s sister but in the series, they made Maeve connected with Simon and Janae, probably to make a little bit of sense with the plot of the series.

Jake is the one who changed Cooper’s story in the About That post, not his girlfriend coz of the shame that his best friend is gay. And speaking of homophobia, Cooper’s dad is way more homophobic that they have portrayed the series. And he was never outed to anyone including his girlfriend which is a big change in the TV series, yet again.

Addy never hid the TJ thing in the book but in the series, they made her more guilty about it. In the book, she decided to tell Jake at some point and but Jake knew about it that’s why he agreed on Simon’s plan but he wanted to plot everything on Addy. So basically, Simon juts wanted his enemies’ lives to be looped and grabbed down together with him in his grave. But there’s a second book which I think will be the second season of the series however, how will they twist the show again this time?

Yes, there’s so many questions when it comes to having book adaptations coz we never know when and how they will change every bit of information written in the book just to fit it in the liking of all the viewers. I would’ve chosen to stick with the book’s plot if I will be asked coz the story is more sensible that way. However, the way they made the series interesting is that they had us believing that yes, the four have the perfect reasons to kill Simon.

You know what I liked most, it’s Nate and Bronwyn’s relationship, I mean in the series they were just like crushing on each other but in the book, they’re like more than that. They are way closer and sweeter to each other in the book coz they are literally together in the book. Brownwyn started to like Nate during the investigation, I think both book and series managed to do that just more intense in book, I guess.

I funny comment only, the filter of the whole series is like the place was always sunset mode. like maybe that’s how the filter works for them but yes, it doesn’t look good. It felt like I was watching some kind old movie with a brown-ish filter. Yes, I know. I really noticed that. lol

All in all, I will give this 85% wonderroanne rating. I love the book more.
