I don’t know why this took me this long to write a review for one Marvel movie. Sometimes, just like in reading books, we get this pause and we just think what’s the sense of this? I know it will be such a disappointment to my Marvel-fan readers but this is the reality, there are movies that don’t fit well on the course of the reviews. But I believe I can actually write a good thing about the latest Morbius movie that was released last April.
Well if you still feel curious about how this movie became a flop but somehow managed to survive the judgement of the entire Marvel-fan community, well, better to click more!
There’s no such difference on how I start reviewing movies like the Marvel and the DC movies because I always take distinct comparison with their comic versions and I love doing that especially with written materials so this movie, however it is, deserves a nice review. So I think this is the part where I tell you, I kinda have so much to tell about this movie coz even if it’s just like an addition to the sequels, I think it is giving some points on which path is the MCU is taking us further.
Morbius (played by Jared Leto) is considered as the living vampire in MCU. He is a doctor who has a very rare disease since he is a kid and had studied to cure rare disease. The only coagulants that he found effective where from the genetics of bats. After injecting the serum to himself, he started to find human blood more appealing that the normal food and he is turning into some kind of monster with abilities that he cannot even imagine he will obtain considering his physical and health condition.
Comic Comparison
Originally, in the comics, Dr. Morbius was working with his best friend Emil Nikos but Emil died because of him as well, after he wasn’t able to control his hunger and sucked Nikos’ blood. In the movie, they made a big change of character, I think to build more story out of it. They created Lucian, who is apparently the epitome of Louisa Crown in the comics. He is the one who inspired Dr. Michael (Morbius) to study and find the cure of the illness. As a villain, of course, the character had build up some grudges towards Dr. Michael for not giving him the serum and trying to get him to join their little Spartan.
In the movie, Michael was killed by Morbius using a huge number of bats attacking him which made sense because Morbius is considered as a friend of bats because of his mixed gene that was caused by the serum. And so, he injected the poison to Michael but the original plan was to inject it on him to stop himself from killing people so I guess, having Morbius in the MCU will be a little more permanent than expected.
I thought we will see Elizabeth Nikos, Emil’s sister, in the film too but they replaced her to someone else since Emil was also out of the picture. Dr. Martine, his new love interest has a very surprising scene at the end, she bit Morbius’ tongue, and at the post credits, she wakes up with red eyes, same as Morbius’, and I think that’s another key point to consider that they can be a follow up movie.
Post Credit Explained
Why does Adrian Toomes aka The Vulture is in the scene? What does Spiderman have a connection with Morbius? Well, I can probably give you a little theory based on the comics. First, Spiderman actually encountered Morbius when he suddenly had so many arms, well that’s a long story to tell but Morbius’ blood made him go back to normal so I think that little connection is there but not only that, second, I think there’s something about the multi-verse, Vulture having to show up in an empty cell and being released is actually a way for him to be meet Morbius and invite to build the Sinister Six which consist of Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Sandman, Electro, Mysterio, and Kraven the Hunter. So I think there’s the connection of the Post Credit Scene.
Morbius has the the bat-blood that explains how Martine got it when she bit off his tongue and woke up eventually but the question is, is she gonna be on Morbius’s side?
Verdict
Honestly, I’m not surprised with the film, I’m not entirely amazed except for the post credit-scene because it has something to do with Spiderman. I think this movie lacked timing. This is not the right time to release a movie like that especially if we’re in a moment where Spiderman’s latest movie left a major hangover and the next month you will be watching Doctor Strange. It could’ve been a good addition to MCU titles if they actually played in the right time and April was not it.
However, I kinda liked how they chose Jared Leto to play Morbius, I think no else will be more appealing to play it and the plot, they’ve changed to match the current MCU which is good however, there some holes where they might not be able to recover and will not be able to follow the comics. Although they managed to keep up when they suddenly put Vulture in the scene made it look a little more connected with the multiverse.
All in all, I have no expectations or whatsoever because I know that Morbius is a stand alone character so they can play with it however they wanted but getting it to enter Spiderverse is an idea that I like.
For now, I’d give this 80% wonderroanne rating. But I would definitely recommend for you to watch it.
P.S. Come to think of it, Morbius is Batman’s Marvel version. yay!
