Wednesday (TV Series)

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“I know I’m stubborn, single-minded, and obsessive. But those are all traits of great writers… And serial killers.”

-Wednesday, Jenna Ortega

If you have seen the series of cartoons and movie adaptations of The Addams Family, then you will know the one and only daughter of the dark, Wednesday Addams. In this Gen Z era, Netflix have come up to relive the Addams Family fever by making a live action series that is focused on Wednesday alone. Of course, we have seen what the family can do, and so I think having Netflix to try and make it darker than it was, I think it a straight yes to me.

In this 8-episode-long series, Wednesday was sent to School of Outcasts, known as `Nevermore Academy, this is the school where Wednesday’s parents, Morticia and Gomez attended school when they were young. The only problem is, by coming back to the Academy, the Addams Family has so many memories in it that some of them were actually memories of an unfinished business. The series is focusing on Wednesday’s social skills and how she can make friends despite her dark image.

In this series, she battles with a monster whom she cannot figure out where it came from and not only that, everyone around her is somehow a suspect. She needs to learn how to trust and not to trust everyone or else, she will be in a lot of trouble. This will cause her a bunch of important things but while in this situation, the past of her ancestors are going to get revealed and somehow, being in Nevermore, gives her a strong connection to her ancestors and what really happened to them. I won’t do any spoilers because it is better to discover rather than the one to spoil.

There are so many characters to watch out for, Jenna Ortega, plays Wednesday Addams, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, Luis Guzman as Gomez Addams, Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday when she was young is now playing as Marilyn Thornhill, Percy Hynes White as Xavier Thorpe, Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin, Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay and Moose Mostafa as Eugene Ottinger. These are the people who lighted up the whole series and every episode is a story to tell. Each student in Nevermore Academy has their own distinct characteristics which I’m sure you’ll love and of course, you also might hate.

Well, let’s not forget Thing, he actually is a star in this series too.

The Verdict

Jenna Ortega definitely nailed the part and I don’t think there’ll be anyone else who can play as Wednesday. Like she is Wednesday. The series is dark but still subtle to watch. It won’t bore you because there’s so much to wonder and the story don’t just revolve in one subject alone but in every episode, you will learn something new.

Regarding the first season of this series, I know that there will be more because the way it ended, it left us all hanging and I think we really deserve more episodes. Although we know that it can get more darker, I hope Netflix don’t make it so dark like how Riverdale and Fate: The Winx Saga became. They went so dark it wasn’t really enjoying to watch. I would love to have Wednesday just as dark as Nano (Thai series) but also it has to have some comic moments in it that balances the whole theme. I hope they will just stick into its current plot and setting because this is better.

There’s no point in comparing it to any other series because it’s the Addams Family, so who else can make it darker and wicked but them? I love how the live action turned out and it seems like it caters to not only Gen Z but also to every ages who will watch it.

I would definitely give this a 90% wonderroanne rating! I wouldn’t have it any other way.
