Shazam: The Fury of the Gods

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Okay, so from having a superpower and then having his family join him as superhero, Shazam is actually getting in this momentum of having a superhero life but as a teenager, Billie is not exactly on track. Because right now he is actually getting confused of what he really does, to top that, he wants his group to unite but how can he do that if everything he wanted is for his glory or what he only thinks was right.

This movie is directed by David F. Sandberg, starring Zachary Levi as Shazam and Asher Angel as Billy Batson, following up the first movie of the same title, Shazam, the second installment has been released last March 2023. Giving us an other dose of Shazamily and another story to cling on with the DC Universe.

Before we even go further, let me just keep a disclaimer like the usual. Click only when you’re ready for some spoilers.

Synopsis

In the latest movie, the staff that was used to give Billie his superpower which he broke after the fight in the first movie was stolen from the museum. It was stolen by daughters of Atlas, Hespera(played by Hellen Mirren), Kalypso(played by Lucy Liu) and Anthea (Rachel Zegler) which they managed to fix by having the wizard who was imprisoned in the Gods’ realm fix it using his magic. The 3 sisters are actually trying to get the Golden apple which is the seed of the Tree of Life. The initial plan is to collect the seed and plant it somewhere to restore their realm.

Freddy, who encountered one of the sisters, Anthea-who pretended to be a newbie in the school-he actually fell for the Anthea and was pretty surprised when he discovered that Anthea lied to him and they captured him trying to capture the whole Shazamily to cleat their powers and make the staff a really powerful one in order to make the seed work its purpose as planned. While in capture, Freddy and the Wizard met and they planned to steal the Golden Apple back from the 3 sisters, in which they almost succeeded however still failed.

The sole purpose of the sisters were to avenge their father and to create a new realm creating a new world for them, Hespera, however, being the eldest, she tries to negotiate with Shazam trying to get the Golden Apple peacefully without any casualties but Kalypso, she doesn’t believe in peace at all and so she unleashed Ladon, the monstrous dragon, which in the greek myth, was actually defeated by Heracles, yes, they are all likely connected…and so I think.

With the strongest monster, Kalypso is undefeated, she was able to take possession of the Golden Apple and she planted it to the stadium, creating a new realm, a literal Tree of Life, however, destroying the human world. This realm has unleashed many other monsters that created chaos on Earth.

Kalypso removes Anthea’s power and also killing Hespera right after. She finally tries to run the whole plan in her own ways, with all the monsters in the place, the Shazamily managed to figure out how they can destroy all the monsters and the only answer were unicorns which definitely was the only creature that scares all the monsters so, yes, they were able to get some unicorns in their side through the help of skittles. Yes, was taste of a rainbow, literally.

Shazam thought that the only thing that can stop Kalypso’s plan was her own sisters, but with Anthea becoming powerless, his only shot was Hespera so he tried to revive her and then they planned to create a dome protecting the world from an explosion that Shazam is going to make to defeat Kalypso and Ladon. However, the mission was a suicide mission and it killed Billy in the process. Yes, Billy was killed for a moment but, of course this is a superhero movie so during Billy’s funeral, Wonder Woman shows up to bring back Billy. After all, only a god can bring back a god and so, Wonder Woman is an Amazona, she is literally the OG God, She restored the whole world form its damages, brought back the power of the staff and yes, brought back Billy/Shazam.

The film ended with the whole Shazamily getting their powers back and getting the happy ending they deserve.

Post Credit Scenes Explained

Emilia Harcourt and John Economos of the Peacemaker (If you don’t know them , you should watch Suicide Squad) They are the representatives that was sent by Amanda Waller to recruit Billy to join the Justice Society, yes, even Billy was surprised that Justice Society is different form Justice League but they have things in common too. Justice Society was created in the Golden Age of Comics while Justice League was made in the Silver Age, meaning they are in a different era. So why Wonder Woman was there? I believe this is the way of DCU trying to get viewers the hopes of having Earth One and Earth Two crossovers in the next coming years.

Not only that, having Emilia and Economos show up in Shazam means there’s still possibility of having Black Adam in the picture. Black Adam is actually the main villain in the Shazam Comics, well, we all know there’s a connection between Shazam and Black Adam, because they basically have the same power source, it Black Adam yells Shazam, he’l probably lose his power and turn into his human form just like Billy Batson.

So as much as we want to deal with only one villain at once, there’s no such thing in the DC Comics, why am I saying this? Coz the second post credit scene shows Dr. Sivana, the original villain of the first Shazam movie, talking to a caterpillar who is actually Mister Mind. And for those who doesn’t know, Mister Mind is the main villain in the original title of Shazam which is Captain Marvel, he showed up in the comics as a huge caterpillar. he was mainly in the 1943 Captain Marvel Comics. It has telephonic intelligence that created the Monster Society of Evil which actually will consist other Shazam/Captain Marvel villains such as Black Adam, Captain Nazi, Ibac, King Kull, Dr. Sivana and etc… So the end game here is that we’re seeing two paths for the next Shazam installment, either they create the connection to Black Adam or make another stand alone movie, by introducing Mister Mind and Dr. Sivana as partners which falls into the original comics and then Black Adam will just come next.

Verdict

Two hours of a movie is enough to tell tales about it but when it comes to DCU Movies, we just can’t get enough. Like it is very obvious when I write my reviews about DCU Movies, I really get more details about what is coming next then what was laid in front of us because DCU is very wide range that we can just connect everything and make a new story out of it. I’m looking forward to having my predictions come true, especially because I never actually written any moviews about the Black Adam, because I wasn’t;t seeing any purpose for it to exist until Shazam: Fury of the Gods was released and I think this is going to a path which leads to lots of crossovers and I am pretty sure, the existence of Wonder Woman in this Shazam Era means something and if in the greater world, Justice Society and Justice League will meet, they why not? I just hope they will do something more exciting in the next DC movie, which is The Flash. Aside from Wonder Woman, The Last is my main guy, I cannot wait to watch the movie this year.

All in all, I have nothing to say but I’m in awe with the movie. although the comedic act is a little too much, the whole thing deserves a clap especially the fight scenes. The first Shazam installment was okay coz it meant to catch kids’ attention, but now, I c a say they are rooting in the path where even adults will finally enjoy Shazam. I hope they continue going in the right path. Coz this is such a big leap to DCU.

It’s a big decision to even finally connect the whole DCU in each of every movies they make and I think this is a start of a good DC universe in the coming years. Hopefully, more crossovers but not to the point that they will complicate things. I still like the comic-adaptation right there being inseam.

I would give this 87% wonderoanne rating, despite the shallow reaction I had at first, while watching the movie, the whole plot got exciting when they actually showed the post credit scenes and the Wonder Woman cameo.
