There’s A Chance of Perfection

One of the teachers I had when I was in high-school was known for being very critical. She is somehow considered as a perfectionist when it comes to everything. She teaches English, Choir and even the adviser the of the school paper.

When I was a choir, I always get sick very often, lose my voice as a side effect, one time, she assisted to lead the choir for a friday mass, and I was appointed to sing a duet with one of my schoolmates, but the entire time I wasn’t feeling well. I did sing but the register of my voice in the microphone wasn’t that good. I was so disappointed with myself when she asked me to step down and not sing for the whole ceremony.

After the mass, she sat beside me and said, “Why didn’t you tell me you cannot sing today?”, of course, I wouldn’t want to disappoint her or anyone. I told her that, I thought I could sing it well despite of my condition. She told me, “When you don’t feel well, just say it, coz we can do alternatives if you are unable to do so.” She also told me that we can never seek perfection if we trust ourselves not to fail, coz we will.

Throughout the years in my high school, she have made me at least the best writer that I am today. She was the proudest when I told her I was aiming to become a news writer. She even told me that she saw me during my ojt and even the articles i published during my internship. She have listened on the radio and other activities I did. And whenever I go to my alma mater to visit she always calls me, “my reporter”. She keeps on telling me how proud she is with ever steps that I did.

She may have been the most difficult critic I ever have but surely she made realize that perfection is something we can learn to achieve.

Her name is Ms. Juliet Lugtu. She’s the person who had a big impact in my life.
