XO, Kitty: A Spin Off We Never Expected

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Lara Jean’s story may be interesting but what about the people around her? We all know that To All The Boy I Loved Before is a hit coz all trilogy were exciting. Well, this 2023, enough with Lara Jean but let’s talk about her youngest sister, Kitty, the Matchmaker. We all know her the pushy sister who sent all the letters to the post, hence, she is the reason why the movie even happened, technically speaking.

Since there’s no more story to tell about Lara Jean coz we all know about her escapades and all the things she needed to face and leave, and she is happy everywhere else, that leaves Kitty alone with her dad and Trina. Which means all the things she needs to do may involve on taking the opportunity of looking about her Asian-Korean culture with the help of her mom’s memories. She discovered that her mom went to KISS (Korean Independent School of Seoul) having a scholarship which she later on tried to apply to and luckily she got in; it’s the same school where her penpal/boyfriend, Dae is studying.

Kitty was planning to surprise Dae on the school’s welcome party but she was the one who got surprised when she discovered that Dae was cheating on her with Yuri, the girl she meet on the street of Korea. Little did she know, Yuri and Dae is trying to make Yuri’s parents believe that they are dating in order to hide Yuri’s real sexuality. Yes, Yuri is gay and she has a girlfriend, Julianna who was sent abroad to be separated with Yuri. This was all planned by her mother, Principal Lim, who happens to be Kitty’s mom’s best friend but when Kitty saw her, and introduced herself, she pretended to k=not know Eve Song, for a major reason which later on was revealed in the movie.

Yuri and Dae eventually told Kitty the whole story about their fake relationship however, it seemed a little too late because Kitty is now confused not because of the situation but she is actually trying to figure out her feelings towards someone. Kitty told Dae and he thought it was his best friend Min Ho, but he was wrong. In the end of the movie, she actually told Dae who it was and basically she admitted all of her feelings. Kitty was expelled for for living in the boy’s dorm room which literally breaks her scholarship rule. And so, she is now left in the plane going to back to LA, but if this isn’t fate, Min Ho is flying in the same plane and they are actually seat mates. Later on, Min Ho told Kitty his feelings about her and yeah, Kitty, like the usual is utterly flabbergasted.

The Verdict

I know, I didn’t mean to spoil the whole series because, I intend to let the viewers see for themselves. The series is actually cute, seems to be crafted from Jenny Han’s book and the plot was so Korean-drama-themed, like all the plot is so chiseled from the Kdramas we were watching.

I love that we all saw some familiar faces who have been in various Korean Dramas, like the actor playing Dae, Choi Minyeong, he’s been in some dramas like Itaewon Class, Strong Girl Bong-soon, W-Two Worlds and Twenty-five, Twenty-one. It was really surprising that the recast Dae, because he wasn’t original person who played Dae previously, but hey, it went well. Guess that was fate.

I also love how they use Kpop music all throughout the movie, it gave us real Korean vibes and I think this boosted the Korean Tourism because aside from BTS and Blackpink, Korea has a real scenery and I think showing them more in the series helped them boost up their tourism.

This movie has so many revelations which I think was enough to just give this a high-rate, however, I got really confused with all the conflicts and now, at the end of the series, we are just left asking how’s gonna make this push Season 2? I mean, now that Kitty was expelled, MinHo confessed his feelings for Kitty, I guess, we just have to wait how things will unfold if season 2 is on the way. I really hope there’s a second season because the vibe of the series is just cute, kawaii.

All in all, I would give this 89% wonderroanne rating. Definitely gonna recommend this if you love Kdramas.

PS. KISS is a fictional school only. I know, I would’ve enrolled there if I knew it existed.
