Okay, so to all the people who are living in UAE, yes, the Barbie movie that is supposed to be released this July 20 was actually delayed. Until now, even Vox Cinemas didn’t release any reason for its postponing. The movie is now set to play in UAE on August 31.
One of the speculations is because of Vietnam’s banning of the movie in the country due to its 9 dash line issue, where in one of the scenes, there was a map drawn on the board which consists of the 9 dash line but in the movie. The 9 dash line is a big issue amongst asian countries who are in dispute with China’s territorial claims towards South China Sea. Together with Vietnam, Philippines is also in the processing of deciding whether they will ban the movie totally in its theaters.
9 dash line (also known as 11 dash line) is the infamous territorial claims that was made by The Republic of China. It is an imaginary segment that is U shaped or cow’s tongue that indicates the claim of China in the South China Sea. The line is against international laws, particularly the United Nations Convention of the Laws of the Sea, this is according to the late former Philippine President Benigno Aquino III.
Up to this date, the claims of China in the Spratlys Island is actually in everyday’s news in the Philippines despite the win of Philippines against the claims which China is also not recognizing in their part. The Scarborough Shoal is actually being monitored by Chinese Military Vessel, which has been a big problem because of the alleged bullying of fishermen that crosses it by imposing fishing ban in it.
Now that the issue is being opened, how will it affect Barbie’s releasing on other asian countries? Now that it is banned in Vietnam and being reviewed in Philippines, how will the other ASEAN Countries will react?
