Gran Turismo Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

If you’re a gamer, you’ll probably know what does Playstation do and what its games are about. Playstation is actually the OG of all the gaming consoles in the market right now, followed by Nintendo and Xbox. Since PS1 to PS5, Playstation has been dominating the gaming industry for so many years, with its wide range selection of exclusive games, you’re a clear legend if you have played most of the games available.

I grew up playing Crash Bandicoot, Tekken, Mortal Combat and Street Fighter, Battle of Tanks, Racing Rally, Vice City and GTA (It was not even my console, I had to borrow console from my cousin whose father works abroad, coz at that time, only kids with parents working abroad can actually afford video consoles and even handheld games like gameboy.) While these are the most common games in PlayStation before, as I grew up and gained a wider access to some other Sony Produced consoles like  PSP which I was able to have because my uncle from abroad gifted my siblings, I was able to play UMDs like Daxter, which technically my most favourite of them all. And since I am now a grow up, with my own money to spend, I was able to buy PS4 and PS5 all from my pocket, and that’s how I became more hooked into gaming. Aside from that, I am a proud mother of two Pokemon Special Edition Nintendo Switch (Yeah, not t brag but it’s all a fruit of hard work) Well, anyway, enough bragging, I just wanted you to know that I am writing a moview not as a movie reviewer but as a gamer.

This new released movie is actually about a famous game in Playstation over the years, the Gran Turismo, a realistic racing simulator that has become the no. 1 simulator of all time because of it’s ability to bring the racing feel right in the click of your thumbs. For back story, Gran Turismo introduced GT Academy in 2008, an Academy established by Darren Cox, a former Nissan Europe Executive, to recruit the best video to be part of the real racing world. The GT Academy is like a camp dedicated mostly for GT/Racing game players; training them with real race cars and chiseling them to become the first video gamer turned race cars.

This is how the movie started, and it is focused on the story of Jann Mardenbourough who won third place in 24 Le Mans race alongside the first ever GT Academy winner Lucas Ordonez. Lucas won GT Academy in 2008 while Jann won in 2011. The movie basically is a representation of how Jann started from being a video gamer then a trainee for GT Academy. Like any other teens at his age, he was constantly told to stop playing video games and get a good grip of the reality instead, but just like any other success stories, he never quit. He proved to his parents and to other people who don’t believe in his track that he can win this journey with his skills.

The movie also showed the accident that happened to Jann when he competed in VLN Endurance Championship at the Nürburgring racing complex although the accident really happened in 2015, 2 years after he won Le Mans. As per his multiple interviews he wanted to include the accident as this was somehow a highlight of his racing life which I actually agree, they made it the part of the movie where he realises how much he really wanted to win.

I am also amazed how they incorporated the race tracks that players have been playing in the Gran Turismo game. I mean, it made the viewers relate so much coz they also pay on those tracks and well, it wouldn’t be that realistic if they didn’t use the familiar tracks.

All in all, I cannot say anything bad about the movie because this is the first time I actually watched a real story out of a virtual game. As I told you earlier, I am actually writing this in a gamer POV. And I think that’s the best shot I got, as a gamer and a movie reviewer at the same time, it is to impossible not to choose the gamer part.

Although if you put it into consideration the whole thing as a movie reviewer of course there are some loopholes, especially in the part where the engagement is just in the race tracks like the story was cut so brief that at some point they got rid of important part of having a beginning, middle and end. For me, it jump immediately in the climax part. As this is also a a fiction, it could’ve been better if they focus also on the personal life of Jann same as how they focused on his racing career.

Nevertheless, the movie is a hit especially for those who really love Gran Turismo and what I noticed when I watched the movie, most of the goers were children between the age of 8-13 years old and some teens and also adult gamers. Was funny also that I was the only one wearing pink that day. Felt a little more like one-of-the-boys.

I would definitely dig a movie like this especially if it is a biography. This deserves a 90% wonderroanne rating as a gamer and. 80% rating as a movie reviewer. Okay, I will follow my gamer instincts at the this time.
