My Life With The Walter Boys Review

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Here’s another book adapted series and it is something that you would want to check out. From Ali Novak’s novel, with the same title, My Life With The Walter Boys. Starring Nikki Rodriguez, Noah Lalonde, Ashby Gentry, new faces but not so new in the film industry too.

This is a story about a girl who lost her family due to an accident and had to lived with her mother’s best friend’s family who is very far away from what she was used to. Jackie, who was born and lived all her life in New York is forced to move away from the big apple to live with her mother’s best friend after the accident. Katherine is married with kids living in Colorado, with a family of 12 boys, She has known Jackie’s mother since they were college and so, they agreed to be the guardian of each other’s family in case something bad happen to them in the future and that’s how Katherine got the custody of Jackie.

Jackie, living her best life in Manhattan, is now forced to live with 12 boys and figure out the adjustment from a big city to a small town living. She’s 15 years old and currently in high school, and she has the same age range of most of the Walter boys which made it easier for her to adjust at some point. But adjusting were not too easy especially with a crush that developed with Cole Walter, second child of Katherine who is 2 years older than Jackie and one of Katherine’s boys immediately developed a crush on Jackie too, and that was Alex Walter who is the same age of Jackie and someone who is nicer than Cole.

All throughout the story, Cole and Alex are in a middle of rivalry against life, having Cole the advantage for being the chick magnet, Alex is just overshadowed by his brothers’ achievements. On the other hand, Cole is as problematic as anyone else, He lost his position in the football team due to an accident which makes him the angry one in the family. In the short span of Jackie’s stay, the three have developed some kind of love triangle but Jackie and Alex ended up together however, Cole’s existence made it hard for Jackie to focus on Alex.

The rest of the Walter family has their own story which made it easier for viewers understand the story without all the information overload. There’s not much to tell aside from the complicated interactions between Jackie and the two Walter boys.

Now, since this is a book adaptation, I will definitely compare the TV series from the novel. Spoiler Alert!

In the book, There are 11 Walter Boys and 1 young Walter girl. In the series, there are only 8 boys and 1 girl. If I remember it clearly, there was supposed to be a twin Walter.

In the book, Cole did kiss Jackie during the truth or dare. In the series, they kissed during the last episode making it a cliffhanger of the whole season.

In the book, Jackie told Cole her feelings towards him which was overheard by Alex. Alex and Jackie talked it out and decided to be friends. In the series, Alex told Jackie I love you during the wedding but she never said it back; while Alex is passed out because he got too drunk, Jackie and Cole kissed.

I guess, those were the major changed that they made from the book which wasn’t really a big deal because making the book into a series should make the viewers want to watch one more episode every time. So I guess the changes were quite okay.

The ending? Same as the book, they left as a cliffhanger after Jackie left for New York without saying goodbye to them. Which brings another possibility of a second season if the writer cooks a continuation story.

All in all, if you’re a bookworm, you would love the movie especially the story. Some might say it was a little boring but yes, I would’ve loved to ahve more seasons of it if there’s a chance because there’s so much potential with the story. However, since we were left hanging by the booking, I guess having to stay that way in the series too is not much of a hurt. I would give this 85% wonderroanne rating.
