Wonka Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Who thought we need so much of Willy Wonka that we wished for a sequel? Well, me thought so too! This Christmas, we are gifted another Willy Wonka movie, although this is a prequel story and this tackles the hard-earned beginnings of Willy Wonka. Wonka never started big. He started from nothing to having everything. Because of his mother and his dream of making the best chocolate in the world, he pursued on becoming a chocolatier, creating very unique and out of this world varieties of chocolates.

In 2005, Tim Burton directed the second Willy Wonka movie which was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Yes, you read it right, this was the second Wonka movie, starring Johnny Depp. The first movie adaptation of the famous Roald Dahl’s children’s book was in 1971 and it was entitled Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, starred by Gene Wilder and the third one is the new movie entitled Wonka starring  Timothée Chalamet.

The new movie is not the same as the old ones because this story is about Wonka’s beginnings, how he managed to be in the industry and what he faced before he was able to flash the Wonka name in the store. Directed by Paul King, this new movie was actually a bit closer with the first adaptation. There’s so much to look forward with this movie especially Timothee.

One thing I didn’t expect was this movie is a musical, but it wasn’t actually that bad, it gave a little flare to the movie and it gave a new life to normal movies. It’s been a while since we had a decent musical. I love how they incorporated musical and story telling without affecting the story. (Scrub, scrub, scrub…this definitely got me LSS)

The Verdict

This is another level of excellence. It finally showed the film industry that musicals are still in and can still be enjoyed by new generations. I hope musicals will return soon, well, not too much musicals, just the same amount of it. The whole cinematography and plot is just best related top the Wonka’s we’ve known before. It’s not the exact one, but they managed to keep the geist of it.

The movie is also teaching kids so many lessons in life and my most favourite line was “Don’t look at your waistline, it’s fine.” The movie is funny and sad too but you’ll enjoy watching it for sure. If you know the previous movies, you’ll have a game of comparing this new movie against the old ones, trying to pin point who was who and what was what. I also love the new characters which I hope I will see again in the next movie, if there is any.

All in all, I would love to recommend this especially for kids because the movie is actually PG and family friendly just like the two previous films. I won’t spoil anything because I believe that if you have watched the two previous films and read the book then it’s not too far from those plot lines, which I guess is a big help to relate the story and a possible movie series will be made in the future. I will give this movie a 89% wonderroanne rating. I would’ve wanted a longer storyline but I guess they can make another movie for it.
