Percy Jackson and The Olympians Review

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Okay, we’ve loved Logan Lerman as Percy and we have been waiting for the next movie since like forever, and that gives me an utter disappointment that they will never continue that movie series. But now, Disney, has come to refresh our minds and decided to remake Rick Riordan’s books and do a longer tale than the movie. Directed by Pierre Gill and Jules O’Loughlin another ship is going to sail for our favorite character Percy Jackson.

Percy Jackson is a story about a demi-god, who have never known his real identity until creatures have been trying to get him and one day, his mother told him everything sent him to camp half blood. But the real story is that he has to prove Zeus that he isn’t the lightning thief or else, destruction will come.

I have the chance two watch the first three episodes and the series may have been a little different from the movie but I think since this is a tv series, they did justice on how they can actually make this enjoyable on each episode they release. If you compare the movie and the tv series with the books, the movie was closer than the tv series, maybe because they had to choose some elements that can make the series go a little longer however, if you read the book, of course, you’ll get a little confused. You know me, I do love comparing books against their adaptations and so, that’s what we will do.

Sorry for the spoilers, but yes, we need to tackle some of it.

First thing is, they didn’t actually pinpoint the fact that Percy has dyslexia and ADHD, they didn’t show how it affected him as a human and how it’s gonna benefit him as a demi god. This fact was actually written by Rick because of his son and I think this is one of the important part of the books.

In the book, Mrs. Dodds revealed herself as a Fury/Alecto, attacking Percy, however, Mr Brunner butts in to save Percy, which also happened in the movie, while in the TV series, they decided to make it Percy’s limelight alone and the Fury landed on him, getting stabbed by the pen given by Mr Brunner.

In the book, Percy is unaware of the Olympians, he got his flash learnings while his mother drove them to Camp Half Blood, which says little he knows about all of the gods but in the series, he knows a little too well because his mother have told him stories about how he was named after Persius or who were the gods and all that. In the book, he knows his dad is dead but in the series, they didn’t actually made that clear.

Minotaur is something that Percy will have to exert and effort to battle with but in the TV series, it seemed a little easy for him to defeat the creature which is very different from the book. It went a little more harder than that.

In the book, Percy wasn’t claimed by Poseidon. Which was followed in the series but not in the movie, coz in the movie, they all know that he is Poseidon’s son.

There’s one point missing if we actually try to follow the books, during the mock-battle between all the demi-gods, there was a hellhound who tried to attack Percy but in the series, they didn’t show any, same with the movie. I think they did this to minimalize the scenes and not to make it a little too over for a teen who hasn’t really gotten used to living in the camp half blood. However, releasing a hellhound signifies an important part of the books, because this is a sign that someone from the inside is actually a traitor, making it easier for everyone to be cautious because they know, one of them is a traitor, which they didn’t show on both movie and series. This scene also is important because it is after the battle when Poseidon claimed Percy after Chiron defeated the hellhound which is justified in the series except the hellhound part.

In the series, Grover discovered that Percy’s mom is still alive and in the movie, Hades himself revealed it during an attack in the camp which is very different from the book, because Percy never really knew that his mother is still alive until they reached underworld.

Some little changes as well, is that they didn’t really include Argus, the Camp Half-blood’s security director. In the book, Argus is actually an important element. which they failed to show too in the movie. And also the healing foods of the gods, the ambrosia and nectar, Grover’s favorite, as seen in the movie too. In the books, these are the two foods that demi-gods consume to heal themselves.

In the book, Annabeth is basically the strongest in the camp, leading everyone, and defeating everyone in everything but in the series, she’s outshined by Luke which I think is a big effect on how we will be looking at Annabeth in the series. Speaking of Luke, if you noticed, he is wearing beaded necklace, but weren’t actually explained. In the book, these are signs or like a count of how many years you’ve been in the camp. One bead is to 12 months, and that is how Percy would know if someone he spoke to was actually in the camp for a very long time. To be fair, they also didn’t show this small thing in the movie.

For the quest, Annabeth volunteered, considering her daughter of Athena attitude, she needs to be in that battle. But in the series, she was chosen by Percy to accompany him in the quest with Grover joining them as well. In the book, Percy did try to runaway and Grover and Annabeth volunteered to join him.

One thing I’m confused about is that they didn’t actually tell a detailed story about how the three big gods hated each other, and how the lightning bolt can actually cause a war between all the gods and the demi gods. In the book, these details wer explained as to make Percy’s journey more relevant.

These are some of the changes within the first 3 episodes that Disney released, I bet there will be more, although, to conclude this, I guess these changes were made to make the tv series a little more understandable and relevant for younger kids who will be watching.

All in all, I cannot complain. I love the movie, the series is entirely a new thing to loved and yes, I loved the books very much that I am expecting more of this series since they won’t be continuing the movie series anymore.

I’d give this 83% wonderroanne rating for now because I based my rating into the adaptation and how little but important things were left out. I recommend this series to everyone especially for teenage kids. This will teach them more about Greek gods.
