“A line between a friend and enemy is not as clear as I once believed, once it’s crossed, there’s no going back because transformations are permanent”- Orion Pax, Optimus Prime.
In the world where everything is just too realistic and everything has forgotten physical toys and just play digital toys instead, some Gen-z don’t even know that Transformers, Ninja Turtles, Marvels and DC Superheroes were actually toys before they even made it to the big screens. But seeing them in the reels are actually a sign of how technology has progressed throughout the years. We have seen so many Transformers movies through out the special years of robots but we actually never saw a prequel until last year and now, they are actually giving us the taste of a real prequel.
This is it. I was waving my predictions when I watched the last Transformers movie last year. I said it, if we stick into Michael bay’s Transformers Story, we will get a huge come back with too much possibilities of movie sequels and this is what we are getting in this latest spin-off. The story of how Optimus Prime and Megatron really started their rivalry and how their world really was in the beginning. of course, we had a glimpse of their story every time they have a face-off.
This movie, directed by Josh Cooley is somehow a start of a great story if you really want to count further history when it comes to Transformers. This story is about Optimus Prime and Megatron, and how they really started as Cogless miners in the Planet Cybertron and they’re actually best of friends. Yes, you read that right, best friends. This is unlikely believable due to the stories we have seen form the past movies but technically, the history they have can actually started from a deeper level. Like there’s a good reason why they always head to head over each other and they try to kills each other’s plans on taking over.
In the story, they are best friends, and miners in their planet, like usual kids who get themselves into trouble, Optimus is actually the one who keeps on pushing Megatron to do something big and out of the ordinary and that’s how the film has started. As a miners they cannot join the race for the robots but they did, just to prove every one that they can, however, failing to do so, they not only made their situation worst, but they also got demoted along the way but along the way they met a new friend, B-127, well, we all know who is B-127 and so the history takes it toll, getting them into another trouble but this time, they’re not enemies, they’re actually friends.
And meeting the Primes, finding the Matrix of leadership is what’s gonna shake their story.
The Verdict
It’s not a surprise that someday they will do something like this for a spin-off because I actually predicted the same while writing The Rise of the Beasts review last year. I was wishing for them to get us some retro story that will actually tell their origins and yes, we got a thing or two of it. Thanks to Josh Cooley, we are getting some hot-nostalgia especially how they really looked like before because they look like their old selves in this movie, like how the old toys really looked like.
With Chris Hemsworth as the voice of Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron, Scarlet Johansson as Elita-1, and Keegan Michael Key as Bumblebee as some of the actors playing in this movie, I guess you’ll be surprised how the movie really turned out even if it won’t show any human interaction at all.
However, we cannot get all the best, isn’t? There are also some loopholes that we barely saw but still there. I was looking for deep story aside form having the both rivals be best friends at first and have to complete a mission together and so on and so forth. I wanted more crazy deep-diving in their history, well, at least that’s what I expect it to be but yes, we didn’t get that much depth.
Seeing the Primes made them all realized that they’ve seen legends, however, I was looking for some kind of connections to this scene. The search for the Matrix is what kept the story going at least but that’s just it. Maybe if they showed us how the Primes lived before, it might be a little worth the coming back. We’ve seen however, the dreamy Megatron and I think that serves a sign that this is what drove him to be more enthusiastic with everything he was fighting for. And in the movie, the power made Megatron cling for it and be hungry for more, so I guess that was the real start of it.
The scene where they discovered the Primes and Alpha Trion, and the real story of the Matrix of Leadership and about Sentinel Prime, their idol, that was just some of the key stuff that Josh Cooley can pick up, like as a sequel perhaps if they wanted to make this universe a long running one. If this story will continue, they could pick up into much deeper story plots, and can actually make a new ones that will connect the story with the human world.
Well, you better watch it coz, I won’t tell you all the story, there’s a reason we don’t spoil some moviews. It’s for viewers to discover and learn for themselves.
All in all, I would definitely give this a good 87% wonderroanne rating. I expected some human interactions, thinking that Transformers One can actually create that story, but yes, getting that history told is more than what we bargained for.
