SMILE 2 Review (Bonus: Ending Explained)

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

We all know that if a movie has a sequel, it is either the first one is better or the second one surpasses the first and this goes over and over as long as the sequel continues. This year, after a two wait, Smile movie has finally released a sequel, Smile 2.

Despite of the years difference, Smile movie was actually cynical when it comes to getting the sinister. It was really sinister-y but a little confusing but predictable, I guess that’s what we can put that phase in the first movie. The movie was supposed to feel like a mystery and thrilling at the same time, well. it was quite a number of feelings you get because it was a psychological thriller.

This time, Smile 2 revolves in the story of Skye Riley, played by Naomi Scott (You’ll remember her has Disney Princess Jasmine, Power Ranger or even part of the Charlie’s Angel’s). Skye is a popstar is coming to the public again after an accident that cause her a year of her career. Skye started to feel the SMILE curse after visiting her drug dealer. While she’s a public person and she needs to show up in front of the audience all the time, the challenge is to fight her smile curse while acting normal.

The new Smile movie is not as different as the old one; just like the previous installment, all the victims gets to have this manic episodes after they see someone else die. It’s like a cycle that makes them really want to die, plus the evil thing that makes them see a smiling face or them making that smiling face. What makes it more different is that the movie is more gruesome this time. It’s not just a simple, knife and die kind of situation, the whole thing is actually cruel and psychological. It actually reminded me of the old The Ring movies where they get to be killed while seeing the ghost but in reality, they’re really he ones making it happen.

This movie is actually beyond the first one. This is a big surprise that they actually didn’t make this movie a little redundant knowing fully that this is a sequel. Directed by Parker Finn, (he also directed the first movie, which is not a surprised to me that this will be another knockout because he also directed the movie Laura Hasn’t Slept which was one of the best ones that I have watched. The Smile 2 is actually somehow chaotic and twisted for me. More like it depicts the vulnerability of ones mind especially when it comes to moments like seeing someone kill themselves. It also came naturally to Skye to see the hallucinations and her having no idea of what was happening made her convince herself that it is her mental health being getting her out of line not even the curse. It may have took her a little longer to figure out what was happening but I guess it’s how they made the movie to be and this is actually one of the best thing they got, although there are still loopholes in the movie just like any other sequels out there, this movie somehow gave us another perspective of it. I feel like they made it more focus on making it a little relatable by showing Skye’s life in and out of the spotlight.

All in all, aside form how gruesome the death scenes are, I really love the suspense it gave. I would definitely give this 72% wonderroanne rating.

P. S. The creepiest part for me is when the people with smiling facing were all over Skye’s place. It was really twisted and crazy.

This part is where I explain the ending…if you have watched the movie, scroll more, if not, and you don’t want any spoilers, then that’s the end of your reading…

Ending Explained

Clearly, having a famous pop-star as a main character is one of the obvious leads of how the ending will turn out. Smile is a curse, as I previously mentioned. Skye, was in the trance of fighting the curse at the end but failed to do so and that is why, she killed herself in front of thousands of fans watching her concert making the the Smile spread…Mass Curse as they said. To be honest, I have seen how the end will be, predicted even when I haven’t watched the film. Technically if you see someone kill themselves, the curse will pass on to you which makes it more likely that everyone will be cursed even the ones watching it online. Having to said that, I don’t think they are still planning to follow up this sequel or if ever they do, I just wanna know how this mass curse will turn out.

Will it really affect everyone or is it just a plot twist that the director wanted us to see? If I eve see another movie to following this one, that one has to go beyond this twisted second film. I will be expecting more.
