Maybe this is the final entry in the Mission Impossible film series, MI: The Final Reckoning has set another standard when it comes to action movies. Well, in this era, if it’s not Tom Cruise, Jason Statham, or Keanu Reeves, we’ll have to think about it twice. The Final Reckoning was set at the time where Ethan (played by Tom Cruise) needed to choose who to save, the world, or his friends. He has to do the impossible to be able to retrieve the entity and kill it but along the way, he lost people that are important in his life and he met again some of those who became part of his journey. It was like a mini reunion for some of the actors he worked with during the previous film installments.
In this journey, Ethan had to work again with the US government to prevent the entity from launching all nuclear missiles available in the globe and possibly ruin the entire mankind. To all those who don’t know know, The Entity is a self aware AI that has its own mind and can actually penetrate in cybersecurity and predict what will happen in the future. This technology was the main point of the whole Mission Impossible movie franchise. Not knowing, Ethan was the one who made it possible for the Entity to exist. Every move that Ethan made in the previous movies, it had an effect with the Entity.
Luther (played by Ving Rhames)was able to create a kill code that can actually stop The Entity, and erase its entire existence but this kill code fell into the hands of Gabriel (played by Esai Morales) who is the main antagonist in the Dead Reckoning. Now, Ethan has to first retrieve the Entity from the deepest parts of the ocean and steal the kill code from Gabriel and erase the Entity…easy right? Well, the problem is the entity is in the other part of the world and Ethan will have to deal with Russians which is very hard considering he had to swim down the ocean without creating a war between US and Russia. And then once he got it, he had to save himself coz, after all, the entity is to be retrieved from the deepest side of the ocean. There’s a possibility that Ethan can die and if his team a little late from retrieving his body, the mission will be failed and Ethan will be dead.
At the end of the day, Ethan definitely did what he was aimed to do but the process to do it was what this movie was all about. The plan and the tricks to make it happen, it was really out of this world. Despite the good reviews in 2023, Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning is getting some mixed reviews from everyone, including me, I’d say, it was a great way to end an era.
There are instances that I was questioning the probability of each scenes but it really did its job to make it work and make the movie really as is. However, the main thing I wanted to emphasize in this review is that, 2hr and 50mins is too long. It wasn’t that exciting as the Marvels: End Game nor the DC: Justice League but I didn’t get why they have to make the whole movie that long. There were actually people snoring in the middle of the film, some just went back after 30mins which is really understandable considering that when you watch the whole thing, they could’ve just squeezed in everything in just 2 hours max.
I am amazed with the coded messages they have been sending to each other. They were all spy coded. One thing that really amazed me was the message sent by the US President to the Commander “May 22, 1996” and the commander knew what it was. And also how they sent the coordinates to Ethan, it was so cool when Ethan figured it out. It’s giving spy movies and puzzles.
The movie has its strong parts and even some loopholes but it definitely did justice because we still saw how Tom Cruise does his death defying stunts. This might be the last one for the series but I hope this is not the end for Tom. The film industry deserves more action films starring tom Cruise
All in all, I cannot say anything bad about the movie aside from it was too long and it could’ve been just an hour shorter. I would definitely give this 83% wonderroanne rating!
