We all know that Spider-man has so many multiverse versions, to name the most recent one, Spider-man: Across the Verse, the whole Spider-man shows that there’s an endless possibilities of Spider-man versions. Even in movies, we saw three different Spider-man versions played by Toby Mcguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland and even the part where we are seeing Venom in the latest version. It’s like yes, we are in this Spider-man multiverse but we are actually updated of whatever can happen in each multiverse. Thanks to Marvel/Disney for not doing any big leap on changing Spider-man stories, most of these movies were actually close to the comics.
This 2024, Marvel decided to take the journey further by introducing Madame Web. She is somehow the female counterpart of Spider-man, in a very wide Spider-man mutilverse. In layman’s term, she is the Female Spider-man. She has a psychic ability which gives her the gift of knowing what will happen ahead before it even occur in the realtime. In comics, she was introduced in the comics in 1980. She was created by Writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr., The Amazing Spider-Man No. 210.
Same as the comics, she is still a normal human who gained superpower after an accident. Played by Dakota Johnson, Madame Web is set in the verse where no one knows about Spider-man and no one has ever heard of Spider-man at all, except for the other Spider Women that existed in this timeline. This goes to show that this story doesn’t require you to pin point, who’s who and who’s not because they are all from a different backgrounds on how they became Spider-Woman sort of.
There’s so much going on in this movie, not to mention how they managed to incorporate all the not-so-important scenes that can make the movie, The Movie. If you are a Spider-man fan, and you just want to refresh yourself from the story, better not do that because you won’t see any of that in this movie. This is like an independent film where they showcase different kinds of Spider-Woman. Moreover, this is not the kind of movie that you would want to focus on because there’s no way you’re going to get the same action of that in the 1980 The Amazing Spiderman.
To sum it all, this is not what we expected the movie to be, especially that we know this is a big jump from Spider-Man and Venom and then to this. it’s rather disappointing how they made the movie a little bit confusing, aside from the plot, and how the characters build the whole story, it’s just so wrong that we cannot even get to the finish line without judging it bits by bits. I’d say, there’s too much going on and for it to have one story alone, it’s too complicated than that.
I know, you might say there’s a little good to it, yes, there is, only if you never watch Spider-man movies because if you did, you’ll react they same way everyone did when they saw the movie. This might not be the first fail of Marvel but this the first one for the Spidey community, considering all the installments of Spider-Man are actually beyond our expectations.
As I write this review, I do realized that since Thor: love and Thunder, all the superhero movies have gone to the pit, trying to catch on; even DCU has its failed entries, not to mention The Aquaman being the worst on them all as of today’s date.
All in all, I watched this as a Spider-man fan, and while watching, I had considered to try my best not to think of it as such. I try to watch this from a non-fanatic point of view, and to my dismay, i still didn’t find it interesting. there’s just so much going on in the story that even the one’s who don’t know Spider-man will get confuse of. I was hoping they focused on more of the history of the character rather than put the story on the spot, making it a little awkward for each Spider-Woman to create their story in each scene. I guess I’m just expecting a deeper story out of it, considering there’s so much to explore.
I’d give this 70% wonderroanne rating just because of me getting confused with the story. To be honest, I expected more, since I am a big fan of Spider-man.
PS. Not even Dakota Johnson, who is well known for her Fifty Shades of Grey movies, can save this flop. I’d say, they try to make Dakota their Madame Web just to save The Marvels fail last year.
