The Idea of You: Anne Hathaway’s Refreshing Role in a May-December Love Story

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Is this the time for the era to get used to couples with huge age difference, especially on films? Well, to tell you the truth, there’s so little of those May-December affair films that were released throughout the years because as i have noticed, people are still not used to doing the whole thing because there are still huge commenting about it but in reality this is happening with some couples who have huge age differences.

The movie The Idea of You is about a 40 year old woman named, Solene, who happens to attend Coachella to be her daughter’s chaperone and meets a 24 year old, Hayes, who is in boy band performing that day in Coachella. They met in Hayes’ trailer after Solene thought it was a public trailer.

From day on, Hayes, tried to find Solene and they became more than friends, reaching to the point where they need to label it out and know that their age difference can affect their blooming relationship.

There’s not much going on in this movie, not much of a surprise, considering that their situation is actually a May-December love affair. But the I guess the main focus in this movie are the characters. Anne Hathaway has been playing romantic movies for years and I think that this is one of the movies that she hasn’t played before. Anne plays Solene, a divorcee, who happens to have a daughter who still isn’t that moved on with her experience towards her ex husband, the father of her child. She is keeping herself shelved knowing that she cannot trust anyone that easy, until she meets Hayes.

Nicholas Galitzine is playing Hayes and there’s so much to say about this actor that I cannot even explain. He is so versatile and we have seen him playing in Purple Hearts, Red, White & Royal Blue. Surely, he is an actor in his era that everyone is looking forward to.

The whole relationship is fine, like the usual honeymoon phase in all relationship, first few weeks were fun but by the time it grows and be serious in time, then there’s the conflicts because of each other’s interests. Hayes is 24, a popstar, a lot of going on in his life while Solene is an art gallery owner who has a 16 year old kid and is probably done playing with her life.

The movie is a classic. We know when Anne Hathaway is in it, then it is a good one. The whole plot is rather predictable than usual but anyone whose gonna watch will know what’s gonna be the conflict of the scene and how they will work on it will be as predictable as any movie is but certainly, I guess we have focused more in the people playing the role and they are remarkable.

All in all, I love how the movie tackled some May-December fair issues and how really the society speaks for it in reality because yes, they will say something about the relationship no matter what and it is only up to the couple how they will handle criticisms.

P.S. The whole August Moon boy band thing kinda reminds me of One Direction and it is just so nostalgic. Not a fan but yeah, they were The August Moon back then. I’d miss those days where boy bands are still in. BTS is a boy band but yeah, I’m talking about Westlife, Backstreet Boys and Nsync.

I’d definitely give this a 80% wonderroanne rating!
